Read Write Inc. (RWI) Phonics

At our school, we use Read Write Inc. (RWI) to teach phonics and early reading. RWI is a structured, systematic and highly effective phonics programme developed by Ruth Miskin. It helps children learn to read confidently, fluently and with understanding.

What is Read Write Inc.?

Read Write Inc. teaches children to:

• Recognise sounds (phonemes) and link them to letters (graphemes)
• Blend sounds together to read words
• Read with increasing fluency and expression
• Understand what they read
• Spell and write accurately

Phonics is taught in daily, fast-paced lessons that are lively, engaging and carefully matched to each child’s stage of learning.

How RWI Works

Children begin RWI in the Early Years and continue into Key Stage 1, and beyond if needed.

Children learn sounds in a clear, consistent order

They are grouped by their phonics ability so that teaching is closely matched to their needs

Lessons include speaking and listening, reading, spelling and writing

Children read books that are closely matched to the sounds they know, ensuring success and confidence

Regular assessments ensure that children are moved between groups quickly when they are ready to progress.

Supporting Reading at Home

Children who are learning through RWI will bring home fully decodable books that match the sounds they have been taught in school. Reading these books regularly at home helps to reinforce learning and build fluency.

We encourage parents and carers to:

• Listen to their child read every day
• Talk about the story and the meaning of new words
• Celebrate effort and progress
