Before Easter, Year 5 took a trip down to the local cinema, Regent Centre in Christchurch, to watch their own film trailers on the big screen.

It was a wonderful opportunity for the children’s families to come and watch the work that the children had produced during their literacy unit.
Lots of families came along to celebrate the children’s work
The children had worked in groups of 4 for about 4 weeks to act as film trailer producers. Using the film, How to train your dragon, the children selected clips from the film and worked as a team to write a voiceover. Using Windows Moviemaker, the children ordered their clips, decided on a soundtrack (which delved into Miss Cox’ extensive music collection) and recorded their soundtrack.
Teamwork was the key!
The finished products were amazing and it was so lovely to see how proud the children were of their work.

They edited, re-recorded and persevered with the task to get the outcome they wanted to achieve.

The children were dedicated to their project and made all of the Year 5 staff very proud. Thank you to all the families and friends who came along to the cinema to watch all 12 films.
The excitement before the showings began
It meant a lot to all of the children to celebrate their work with you. Thank you to Eliot Walker and the Regent Centre team for allowing us to use the Cinema.
Before Easter, Year 5 held a big photography exhibition to display the photos that they took and edited earlier in the year during their literacy topic.

During the afternoon the children cooked appetisers and created fruit kebabs for the evening.

The children invited local schools and lots of people in the community to come and see their wonderful art work.

An amazing achievement to have your work displayed in a gallery at 9 or 10 years old
The photographs were for sale at £5 a photo and we sold over 35 photos. The whole event was a huge success and was well attended by lots of families.

After Easter Year 5 had a special visit from Mary Reader and some chefs from Christchurch who came in to inspire the children with some tasty recipes.
Here are some foods that are locally produced
After a demonstration from the chefs and the all important tasting, the children set to work with cooking themselves.
First you need to soak it in the lemon juice
After chopping, dicing, mixing, tossing and peeling, the children cooked a sea bass casserole and a goats cheese and watercress salad.
Chop up the vegetables
The whole day was so inpiring some of our Year 5 children entered into the Christchurch Food Festival fair trade competition and Billy got through to the finals on the first day of the festival.
Lots of concentration needed
Billy attended the event alongside his Mum and represented the school really well. It is the first time any of our children have entered this competition so well done to them.

We look forward to welcoming Mary to Somerford next year and would like to thank all of the chefs who gave up their time to work with our children.

Moonstones need your help! Do you have any spare boys’ or girls’ clothes that no longer fit your children? Moonstones are desperate for ANY aged 2-3y, 3-4y and 4-5y clothes to go in our “Accidents Sometimes Happen” cupboard! We also need any unwanted shoes, trainers or wellies. If you can donate anything, please give your items to Kerrie in the front office, or ask your child to come down to Moonstones.

The final day saw us all having to take a leap of faith and face our fears on the 40ft Abseiling Wall. As we approached the wall, some of us started to get a few butterflies in our tummies and as we turned the corner and saw the huge wooden structure looming tall above our heads, many children were heard muttering the fateful words, “OMG!” It really did look a threatening and challenging beast! Some decided this was not the time to face their fears; some got harnessed up but didn’t make it to the ladder; some made it up the ladder but had to be rescued back down by Mr Pearson but the brave and adventurous succeeded in their bucket loads. A few wobbly legs were seen shaking at the top as the children had to back themselves off the top of the tower and some children began their descent by trying to head butt their way through the wall!!! There were a few ‘dangling spider’ techniques in action and some who fancied their chances as a future James Bond, jumping their way down the tower. However, the overall abseiler extraordinaire was Aaron who managed to get from top to bottom in less than 5 seconds with a ‘free fall drop’ manoeuvre!! On Saturday night, we dressed up warm and cosy to go and spend our evening around the camp fire. Our PGL Leaders, H and Tom, got us off to a fine start with some ‘tall tales’ and singing games. Then we had to pass the test of the clapping game. Our initial over-confidence was quickly shot down as we realised our coordination skills had probably been burnt out by the SATs tests! Mrs McMillan’s coordination was so far gone that she couldn’t even find the seat and ended up sprawled on the floor. Unfortunately, our budding David Bailey’s weren’t quick enough with the camera and so this moment will only live on in the memories of those who were present!! Once the laughter of the game had subsided, we got on to the serious business . . . . toasting the marshmallows. Due to ridiculous Health and Safety rules (which are clearly made by people who haven’t been looking after 43 children constantly!) the children were not allowed to toast their own, or even any for us, so we had to wait on them hand and foot!!! They were quick to put in their orders of: ‘lightly toasted please’, ‘I want mine nice and crispy’ and ‘ooo I would like a nice caramelly one’ and before we knew it they were munching away. Another song led by H and we were then on our way back to the cabins for showers, bed and . . . SLEEP!!!!

If you go down to the woods today, be sure of a big surprise! As part of our “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” topic, Moonstones held a teddy bear’s picnic. All the children brought in their own teddy bear and we enjoyed a yummy snack in the sunshine. We talked about healthy food and we all designed placemats with fruit and vegetables on them to help us to remember what is good for us.
A huge thank goes out to all the parents who donated food for our picnic. It was a proper feast!
We cant wait to eat them!!
The children also made Teddy Bear biscuits at the end of the week which were DELICIOUS!
