Under the Sea

This term our learning has been focused around the topic of ‘Under the Sea’. The children have particularly enjoyed the ‘Rainbow Fish’ and ‘Bright Stanley’ stories, responding with interest and enthusiasm to a wide range of activities.

Spelling things out!

Our ‘Pirate Ship’ role-play area proved to be very popular, with children taking on the role of the Pirate Pete and acting out familiar parts of the story alongside their friends.

Showing our turtles!

We have also used paint, junk modelling, chalks and playdough to create our own sea creatures and explored Miss Wittman’s turtle ’Crush’ uing our hands, which was lots of fun!

Check out the creatures we made!

We celebrated the end of our topic  with the parents being invited to an under the sea assembly. In which we shared poems, songs and dances about all the sea creatures we had found out about.

Chocolate Rocks?!

This week in Science year 3 have been learning all about the 3 different types of rock: sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic.
We used chocolate to make our own!

We used layers of milk and white to make sedimentary.

Then we made igneous rock.

We had to press really hard with our hands to apply heat and pressure to make a hard, smooth rock.

Finally Miss Parker made metamorphic – that involved lots of heat so she dipped her chocolate rock in tea! We then left it to cool.

It was such a fun lesson!

Twit Twoo the Owls Come to Year Twoooo!!

Last Monday, Year 2 were lucky enough to have 3 flying visitors come to see them in their classrooms! The feathered birds arrived with a man who told us all about owls – how they hunt, how they sleep and other interesting facts! Did you know that you can tell what time of day an owl hunts by the colour of their eyes?! We were even allowed to stroke the tawny owl’s tummy! It was very soft indeed.

A slow worm or a snake?!

Last week the children noticed that there was a very strange animal in the playground. Miss Cox was very surprised when she heard the excited voices shouting “snake!”. However when we all looked closer we noticed that in fact, it was a slow worm! Luckily Dan carefully picked it up and put it in the nature reserve.

Would you have touched it?!!

Year 5 experience the Festival of Colour!

On the last afternoon before half term, Year 5 put on their oldest clothes and suited up in white overalls with hoods up ready!

Ready for action!

All of the children proceeded to the Key Stage 2 field where they marked out a large rectangle with pots of yellow, green, red and blue powder paint.

Red paint can go here…

The children took part in re-creating the Hindu festival of Holi.  Holi is also called the Spring Festival - as it marks the arrival of spring the season of hope and joy.

Wow look at all the colours!

The children thoroughly enjoyed throwing coloured powder on each other and re-creating their own festival.

Here comes some more…

Unfortunately, Mr Nourse did not wear any old clothes under his overalls so when he took them off he looked lovely and colourful for his next meeting.

Ooooops!!!

Here are some photos of the festival!

We had the best afternoon!

Marvellous Moors Valley

As part of their rewards and responsibilities jobs, Year 6 were lucky enough to earn themselves a reward of an action packed day at Moors Valley Country Park. Despite the weather, we had a fantastic day!

We started our day with some orienteering through the forest. Mrs Hudson was an expert at this. Her group were the first to find the trails. Miss Surman and Miss Bairstow combined and with a little help from our helper Adam and excellent map reading skills from Nathan Cracknell we just about made it.

After all that hard work and hours of walking, we all enjoyed our pack lunches in the warm. Play time came next where we went to the massive play park to enjoy our freetime.

Year 2 Castle Finale!

To mark the end of our Castle, Knights and Dragons topic, Year 2 celebrated with a Castle themed day. The children came in dressed as a character you would find in a castle (as you will see in the photos!) and spent the day rotating around castle past-times such as making shields with their own coats of arms, jousting, practising their aim in target practice, making crowns and eating at a banquet.

‘I loved seeing how many times I could juggle and keep a balloon up in the air’

‘I liked sewing a pattern’

Sewing in a medieval style

‘I loved jousting!’

‘My favourite thing was making a shield’

‘I liked being a Jester and juggling!’

Thank you to all the parents for supplying the costumes – we all had a great time!

Have you visited the Children’s Centre recently?

In Christchurch, we are so lucky to have access to two Children’s Centres and even luckier to have one on our school site.  This means all parents with children under 5 have immediate access to help, advice and support.  They offer a wide range of activities, resources and support and it is well worth having a look at the flyer to see what they are running at the moment.  If you’ve never visited the centre, why not pop in and have a chat with Chris and find out what they have to offer you?

All Rise!!

In Year 6 we have been learning about Micro-organisms, which are microscopic living things that you can’t see with the human eye.  You need to use a microscope to see them but they are found absolutely everywhere. Some of them, like yeast are helpful but some of them are harmful and disease causing, like bacteria. We have learnt that every living thing needs 7 things to stay alive and we remember this by using MRS NERG (movement, respiration, sensitivity, nutrition, excretion, reproduction and growth).  By knowing this, we are able to help avoid the spread of bad micro-organisms by making sure we don’t give these tiny living things what they need to stay alive.  To test Mrs Hudson’s theory that micro-organisms grow best when they have food and warmth, we investigated the growth rate and process of yeast.  We set up an experiment with four conical flasks.  One had just yeast, one had yeast and sugar, one had yeast and warm water and the final one had yeast, sugar and warm water.  We kept the test fair by keeping these factors the same: size and shape of flask, same teaspoon to measure, same amount of yeast, same amount of sugar, same amount of water, same temperature of the water.  The factor we changed was what was inside the flask with the yeast.  As soon as we had put the ingredients into each flask, we put a balloon on top so that we could see if the mixture was growing at all.  To our absolute amazement (and excitement!) we found that the yeast, sugar and water mixture very quickly started to react and produce a gas which inflated the balloon.  In fact, the mixture reacted so well that after 30 minutes, the yeast foam was actually rising up into the balloon.  We had fun doing this – it really had a ‘WOW’ Factor.

After 10 minutes.
