The Mini 2012 Games!

On Thursday 22nd March, Bournemouth Events Managements students, acting on behalf of the RELAYS team, arranged the Mini 2012 Games for Year 4 and 5.  The children took part in a variety of activities throughout the day.  They were split into 6 teams India, Chile, Germany, Italy, Brazil and Japan.  The students provided each child with a colourful Mini 2012 Games t-shirt to keep.

We love our t-shirts!

Throughout the day the children took part in activities such as Taekwondo, with Des from Kickers Tae Kwon Do.  A child was awarded a medal at the end of each session for their determination and commitment to the session.

Hi-ya!

Another activity was Semaphore, where the children had to prepare a flag demonstrating courage and determination.  When they had finished designing their flags they were taught routines to spell out determination and courage using their flags.

One of the favourites of the day was the assault course!  The children had to step in to each tyre before crawling under the parachute, jumping over hurdles and then overcoming the rest of the obstacles to reach the end before making their way back to the beginning.

Ready, steady, go!

Whilst half of the group were completing the assault course the rest attempted to create a picture through aerial art.  The first few groups battled against the wind to thread the ribbon through the wires to create a picture that could be seen from above.  The final groups made aerial art pictures by using their bodies and had to discuss how they could create each shape.

A new activity to the children was Tchoukball.  At each end of the court there is a ‘frame’ similar to a trampoline.  The aim of the game is for an attacking player to throw a ball at the frame and it needs to bounce outside the D and not be caught by anyone else.  The children really enjoyed learning how to play this game.

Come on black team!

Team building really tested the children’s teamwork skills.  They battled against each other in a variety of games such as folding a piece of tarpaulin with the whole team still standing on it.  The team leaders from the Grange supported the children really well in these activities giving them suggestions to try out.

Keep the whole team on the sheet! Are you ready to fold it again?

The final activity was handball.  This was a fun activity that the children really enjoyed!

Thanks to all of the RELAYS team and the volunteers that came along to run the day.  It was very well organised and a fantastic day for all!

Facing Our Fears

The final day saw us all having to take a leap of faith and face our fears on the 40ft Abseiling Wall.  As we approached the wall, some of us started to get a few butterflies in our tummies and as we turned the corner and saw the huge wooden structure looming tall above our heads, many children were heard muttering the fateful words, “OMG!”  It really did look a threatening and challenging beast!  Some decided this was not the time to face their fears; some got harnessed up but didn’t make it to the ladder; some made it up the ladder but had to be rescued back down by Mr Pearson but the brave and adventurous succeeded in their bucket loads.  A few wobbly legs were seen shaking at the top as the children had to back themselves off the top of the tower and some children began their descent by trying to head butt their way through the wall!!!  There were a few ‘dangling spider’ techniques in action and some who fancied their chances as a future James Bond, jumping their way down the tower.  However, the overall abseiler extraordinaire was Aaron who managed to get from top to bottom in less than 5 seconds with a ‘free fall drop’ manoeuvre!!  Have a look at our heroic abseilers in the pictures below.
